I've seen too many stories like this that ended tragically, because there were almost too many adults around, and each made assumptions about who was watching the kids. Glad this story had a happy ending, but it's a good reminder to designate people at a family gathering to have eyes on the young ones. Things change in a split second. (And your brother should have told you, definitely!!)
